Video: Dolphins' Tyreek Hill Responds to Police Union Statement About Detainment
September 9, 2024
Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill pushed back against the statement made by the union representing the Miami-Dade police officers who pulled him over and handcuffed him before Sunday's matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars, which suggested he wasn't cooperative with authorities.
Hill said during an interview with Lester Holt on the NBC Nightly News that he did everything asked of him:

The full statement from Steadman Stahl, the president of the South Florida Police Benevolent Association, read as follows:
"Before the Dolphins game yesterday, an incident occurred where Tyreek Hill was placed in handcuffs before being released. First, to be clear, at no time was he ever under arrest. He was briefly detained for officer safety, after driving in a manner in which he was putting himself and others in great danger. Upon being stopped, Mr. Hill was not immediately cooperative with the officers on scene who, pursuant to policy and for their immediate safety, placed Mr. Hill in handcuffs. Mr. Hill, still uncooperative, refused to sit on the ground and was therefore redirected to the ground. Once the situation was sorted out within a few minutes, Mr. Hill was issued two traffic citations and was free to leave."
Hill's head coach, Mike McDaniel, became emotional at his press conference on Monday while discussing the incident:
Hill told Holt that he believes the situation could have escalated to even greater levels were he not a famous professional athlete.
"If I wasn't Tyreek Hill, Lord knows, I probably would have been like, worst-case scenario, I would have been shot or would have been locked up," he said. "... Put behind bars, you know, for a simple speeding ticket.
"And that's crazy that officers would take it, you know, to that level."
Hill, who was pulled over near Hard Rock Stadium for allegedly speeding, was handcuffed by officers and forced to lay on the ground face down during his detainment.
Miami-Dade Police Department director Stephanie V. Daniels previously noted that an investigation into the situation was underway and that one of the officers involved had been placed on administrative leave. She also said Monday in a statement that the body-cam footage from the situation would be released publicly:
"In our commitment to transparency and maintaining public trust, we are releasing the body-worn camera (BWC) footage related to the recent incident involving Hill. While standard protocol is to release body cam footage after the internal review has concluded, the available body cam footage—a combined 105 minutes, 33 seconds—is being released the day following the incident to reinforce the Department's commitment to keeping the public informed. The department is committed to conducting a thorough, objective investigation into this matter, and we will continue to update the public on the outcome of that process."
Some of that footage can be seen below:
"Mr. Hill's legal team is exploring all legal remedies that may be available to Mr. Hill as we believe that the officers' actions on September 8, 2024 were excessive," the star wideout's attorney, Julius Collins, said in a statement on Monday.
