OVERALL

Carson Beck is a strong timing and rhythm passer from inside the pocket.

When kept clean in the pocket, Beck can dissect defensive coverage with good accuracy and ball placement. He thrives working on time within the confines of the game plan. As a passer, he has lived targeting the middle of the field since he became the starter in 2023. He is comfortable hitting slants, crossers, and in-breakers, especially against zone coverages. Beck excels at reading the field horizontally and processing information as defenders move/adjust to the route concepts thrown in their coverage areas.

Beck is accustomed to handling full-field reads and progressions. He will scan from right to left or left to right, reaching each designated part of the route progression before deciding what to do. Beck manipulates defenders in coverage with his eyes. He will look off or hold the defender in place to create enough timing and space for the route he intends to throw. His functional athleticism assists him with creating second-reaction throwing opportunities and solid gains on the ground when given a clear exit lane to open the field.

One of Beck's biggest struggles this season has come against pressure packages, which is the opposite of last season. He is forced into quicker reads/decisions due to being sped up by the defense. There are moments of panic and unsettledness in his process during pressured situations. Getting to Beck early and often is the way to go, you want to throw off his timing and rhythm altogether. Rushing his decision-making naturally forces turnover-worthy plays for the defense to try and take advantage of.

His arm talent is above average but NFL caliber. Beck has displayed adequate velocity in the short and intermediate parts of the field. Certain tighter window throws Beck has hesitated and turned down, throwing into--raising questions on confidence in his arm strength. Some passes sail instead of being thrown on that tight rope-like trajectory. Beck's passing efficiency decreases when he is forced off his spot and made to throw off-platform or on the move. Passes lose steam, and his accuracy/ball placement worsens in those instances. Beck does not offer dynamic or explosive athleticism or playmaking ability with his legs. Beck can create to an extent, but he should not be asked to routinely create something out of nothing.

In conclusion, Carson Beck is a talented pocket-passing quarterback with enough mobility to remove the statue comparisons. When he is allowed to comfortably and confidently throw with timing and rhythm, Beck will make defenses pay. I appreciate his processing and football IQ. He is best suited for a team with a good supporting cast and rushing attack, alleviating the need for Beck to play hero ball or carry the offense. His overall skill set makes him a potential long-time starter in the NFL.
