Eagles' DeVonta Smith Out vs. Saints After Suffering Concussion in NFL Week 3 Game
September 22, 2024
DeVonta Smith's day was cut short as the Philadelphia Eagles faced the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.
The team announced that Smith suffered a concussion and will miss the remainder of the contest.
Smith had 79 receiving yards on seven receptions before he exited the game with the concussion.
Smith came into Sunday's matchup leading the team in receiving yards and receptions, collecting 14 receptions for 160 yards through two games. With Smith now out for the remainder of Sunday's game and potentially longer, the Eagles' wide receiver room has taken a hit in recent weeks.
Star receiver A.J. Brown missed Monday's game with a hamstring injury and could be off the field for an extended period. He told ESPN's Lisa Salters ahead of Monday's game that he "does expect to miss a couple of weeks," (h/t ESPN's Field Yates).
Brown led the Eagles in receiving yards a year ago with 1,456 yards and seven touchdowns, and he was rewarded this offseason with a three-year, $96 million extension. In his only game so far this year, he looked like a receiver deserving of that kind of money as he brought in five receptions for 119 receiving yards and a touchdown against the Green Bay Packers.
While there is no timeline for Brown's return, his Monday comments indicated his absence could be more than the two games he's already missed.
With quarterback Jalen Hurts' two favorite targets potentially out for next week's matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Eagles will look to secondary options like receivers Jahan Dotson, Parris Campbell and tight end Dallas Goedert to make up for the key absences.
