NFL Rumors: 2028 Super Bowl Expected to Be Awarded to Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium
September 27, 2024
Super Bowl LXII in 2028 is expected to be awarded to Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium, according to Sports Business Journal's Ben Fischer.
Per Fischer, the decision is subject to input and approval by the full group of team owners but "key owners" on the NFL Fan Engagement & Major Events Committee want the game to be played in Atlanta.
This would be the first title game in Mercedes-Benz Stadium since Super Bowl LIII in 2019.
That Super Bowl featured the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Rams squaring off, with New England ultimately winning by the final score of 13-3.
The city also hosted the Super Bowl at the Georgia Dome in 1994 and 2000.
Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank has repeatedly expressed interest in hosting the Super Bowl again, revealing in April that the team was attempting to get another one in either 2028 or 2029.
"We have our hat in for another Super Bowl [for the 2028 or '29 game]," Blank said, via Daniel Kaplan of Front Office Sports.
Mercedes-Benz Stadium opened in Aug. 2017 and is scheduled to host a variety of events in addition to Falcons home games. The 2025 College Football Playoff National Championship game will take place in the stadium on Jan. 20.
Atlanta will also host eight matches in the 2026 FIFA World Cup at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, including a semifinal contest.
If the location is approved, the Super Bowl sites for the next four years will be set. Caesars Superdome in New Orleans is hosting this season's championship matchup, while Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara will be the site of Super Bowl LX in 2026. Super Bowl LXI will take place in SoFi Stadium to conclude the 2027 season.
