Yankees' Anthony Rizzo Fractures 2 Fingers; Could Play in MLB Playoffs Despite Injury
September 28, 2024
Anthony Rizzo's health took a hit just before the start of postseason play.
Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reported that the New York Yankees first baseman had suffered two fractured fingers on his right hand and that the team will figure out how to proceed with him as the week continues.
"We'll see what we have as the week moves forward," Boone said, per Hoch. "It doesn't totally rule him out. It's a pain tolerance thing."
Rizzo suffered the injury during Saturday's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates when reliever Ryan Borucki hit him in the hands with a pitch. He fractured his fourth and fifth fingers in his right hand and did not return to the game.
Rizzo has already dealt with injuries in 2024, most notably a right forearm fracture in June that sidelined him for 62 games. He has hit .227/.298/.334 with eight home runs and 25 RBIs in 98 games for the Yankees in 2024.
He was replaced by Oswaldo Cabrera in Saturday's game and he could be an option to replace Rizzo if needed. Another option would be Ben Rice, who played well in Rizzo's absence during June and July and has hit .273 with 24 home runs and 59 RBIs in the minor leagues this season.
Another potential replacement could be D.J. LeMahieu, who is currently on the injured list for a right hip impingement.
The Yankees clinched the AL East and will have a bye to the ALDS.
