MLB Playoff Picture 2024: Mets, Braves to Play on Monday; Latest Bracket, Standings

Doric SamSeptember 29, 2024

B/R

The New York Mets and Atlanta Braves will both have the opportunity to clinch a playoff spot in Monday's doubleheader.

After the Mets defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 5-0 and the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the San Diego Padres 11-2, the Braves lost to the Kansas City Royals 4-2. This guarantees that both games will be played in Monday's doubleheader between the Mets and Braves, and if either team wins Game 1 or Game 2, they will be in the playoffs. If a team is swept, the Diamondbacks will clinch a playoff spot.

Here's a look at the bracket and current standings as the regular season nears its end.

The Mets suffered a 5-1 loss to the Braves on Tuesday, but the next two games of the series on Wednesday and Thursday were postponed due to rain in Atlanta. Two losses to Milwaukee before Sunday's series finale also put New York's playoff hopes in jeopardy.

All games are now final. Scenarios for the Mets are straightforward:

-Win two in Atlanta, get the No. 5 seed, go to San Diego for the Wild Card Series.

-Win one in Atlanta, get the No. 6 seed, return to Milwaukee for the WCS.

-Win zero in Atlanta, go home for the winter.

The Braves had won five straight games before Sunday's loss to the Royals. Atlanta is hoping to avoid missing the playoffs for the first time since 2017.

The NL East rivals have faced each other 11 times so far this season, with the Braves leading the series 6-5. New York earned two road wins against Atlanta earlier in the year.

As for the Diamondbacks, they will be hoping that the Mets or Braves have enough in the tank to win back-to-back games. Arizona is the reigning National League champion after last year's surprising run to the World Series, so the team will be looking to make some more noise if it earns the chance to play in the postseason.
