Fantasy Alert: Patriots' Antonio Gibson Could Start vs. Dolphins Over Stevenson
October 2, 2024
Fantasy managers who have been frustrated by New England Patriots running back Rhamondre Stevenson's fumbling issues this season may want to keep an eye on Antonio Gibson on the waiver wire.
Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo said starting Gibson for Sunday's game against the Miami Dolphins is "definitely under consideration" because Stevenson has had problems holding onto the football.
The Patriots offense overall has been a non-factor in fantasy. Stevenson looked like he might be able to overcome that problem. He was excellent in Week 1 with 120 rushing yards and a touchdown against the Cincinnati Bengals to finish as the No. 7 running back in PPR scoring.
A lost fumble in that game did cost Stevenson some fantasy points, but it was overall a terrific showing. He had another solid outing in Week 2 with 17 fantasy points with 90 yards from scrimmage and a touchdown against the Seattle Seahawks, but he again lost a fumble in the 23-20 overtime loss.
The past two weeks have seen Stevenson provide almost no production in fantasy or reality. He has scored a total of 8.5 fantasy points during this stretch with two fumbles, though neither one resulted in a turnover.
Stevenson's four fumbles ties his career high previously done in 2022 when he had 279 touches. The 26-year-old has 74 touches through four games this season.
On top of the fumbling issues for Stevenson, Gibson has been a more efficient player. He is averaging 5.3 yards per rushing attempt and 6.6 yards per touch with 237 yards from scrimmage. Stevenson is averaging a career-low 4.1 yards per touch.
Gibson, who has 36 touches, has yet to put the ball on the ground this season. He is only rostered in 17 percent of Yahoo leagues and 29 percent of ESPN leagues, per FantasyPros.
The Dolphins could be an opportunity for whomever New England's starting running back is to have a big game. Their defense allowed a season-high 142 rushing yards on Monday night to the Tennessee Titans.
Titans running back Tony Pollard had his best game of the season with 88 rushing yards, 20 receiving yards and one touchdown on 24 touches.
