Davante Adams Trade Rumors: NFL Execs Think Raiders Will Take Less Than Asking Price
October 4, 2024
Multiple NFL front office personnel have told CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones that they believe the Las Vegas Raiders will trade wide receiver Davante Adams for a third-round draft choice "and some change."
That would be below the Raiders' current asking price for a second-rounder, but it also appears that Adams could be exiting Vegas sooner rather than later.
Jones provided the latest on the Raiders and Adams, who informed the Silver and Black earlier this week that he would prefer to be traded.
"The Las Vegas Raiders will trade Davante Adams well before the Nov. 5 trade deadline, and a deal may even get struck as early as next week.
"But in the meantime, sources tell CBS Sports the Raiders are discussing internally how much of Adams's remaining $13.5 million salary they'd be willing to pay down in order to facilitate a trade of the three-time All-Pro wide receiver.
"The Raiders and general manager Tom Telesco are 'stuck' on second-round compensation, sources say, and many around the league believe there's pressure from owner Mark Davis to get the deal done at that price. Multiple league executives have told CBS Sports they believe the trade will ultimately get done with a third-round pick and some change."
Adams is currently dealing with a hamstring injury, and he's currently week-to-week, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. The 31-year-old has already been ruled out for his team's game agains the Denver Broncos on Sunday.
In three games this year, Adams has caught 18 passes for 209 yards and a touchdown.
Adams reportedly desires a trade to the New York Jets, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, but he's open to landing elsewhere.
"New York is where the Raiders star wants to play after informing the team on Monday he prefers to be traded, multiple sources say. But Adams has not demanded as much from Las Vegas, and this is not a scenario like Rodgers' in 2023 when the quarterback informed the Packers he would only play for the Jets.
"In fact, according to sources informed of Adams' thinking, he is open to playing for several other teams. The New Orleans Saints, Pittsburgh Steelers, Baltimore Ravens, Buffalo Bills, Dallas Cowboys and perhaps the San Francisco 49ers are among teams that either have inquired about the six-time Pro Bowler or are places Adams would be happy landing."
Adams doesn't have a no-trade clause, which makes it easier for the Raiders to move him. The biggest issue may be his contract, which Adams can restructure to help ease a move. Jacob Robinson and Dianna Russini of The Athletic provided more information.
"Since Adams' leverage is limited (his contract doesn't contain a no-trade clause), he'll likely be moved to the highest bidder.
"However, if he wants to reunite with Aaron Rodgers in New York — reportedly his preference — he can help himself by agreeing to restructure his contract, which has no guarantees after this year. If not, his massive base salaries of $35.6 million in 2025 and $36.6 million in 2026 will be prohibitive for many."
Ultimately, it's a matter of when and not if Adams gets moved, and for what. The Jets seem like the leaders in the clubhouse, but there's assuredly other interest in a three-time All-Pro who's surpassed 100 receptions and 1,100 yards in each of his past four seasons. Whether the Raiders get a second-rounder in return is up for debate, but we'll find out soon enough.
