There has been something of a passing of the torch at ESPN, as Shams Charania revealed Monday he is joining the company as the senior NBA insider after Adrian Wojnarowski announced his retirement from the role last month.

Wojnarowski was asked about Charania during an appearance on the Jim Rome Show and revealed ESPN's newest insider texted him following the retirement announcement.

"I hope he has as fulfilling and as rewarding a career as I've had," he said. "I certainly wish that for him. And he's right about the incredible group of colleagues that he's going to find at ESPN."

While NBA fans have enjoyed making jokes about a potential rivalry between Wojnarowski and Charania in the news-breaking sphere, it is notable that they communicated with each other following the retirement.

Andrew Marchand of The Athletic reported Wojnarowski walked away from approximately $20 million from ESPN.

There is a connection between the two news breakers that goes beyond Charania taking over the vacated role at ESPN. They previously worked together at Yahoo Sports before Wojnarowski left the company.

That started the de facto rivalry between the two, as they were consistently the first ones to break any major news that developed in the NBA world. There are other insiders who break news in the NBA world, but they became synonymous with doing so almost in real time.

With Wojnarowski no longer in the news-breaking world, Charania figures to break even more stories in the coming years while working for ESPN.

As for Wojnarowski, he is moving on to the next chapter of his career. He is the new general manager of St. Bonaventure's basketball program as he looks to help his alma mater during the name, image and likeness era of college sports.
