Patriots' Jabrill Peppers Placed on NFL Exempt List After Arrest on Assault Charges
October 9, 2024
New England Patriots safety Jabrill Peppers has been placed on the commissioner's exempt list following his arrest on Saturday.
ESPN's Adam Schefter noted Peppers is unable to practice or attend games while on the exempt list.
The decision comes after Matt Schooley of WBZ News reported Peppers was charged with "assault and battery on an intimate partner, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, strangulation and possession of a Class B drug" that later tested positive for cocaine, after the 29-year-old was arrested Saturday.
Schooley noted Peppers pleaded not guilty to the charges during a court appearance on Monday.
Braintree, Massachusetts, police told reporters they responded to a call at a home for an altercation between two people early Saturday morning. Peppers is alleged to have shoved his girlfriend to the ground, shoved her head into a wall and put his hands to her neck to strangle her.
The woman was treated at home for injuries to her face and knees, police said.
Peppers was released from custody after posting $2,500 bail. He has a court date scheduled for Nov. 22, but he was allowed to waive the appearance.
Marc Brofsky, Peppers' attorney, said during Monday's arraignment there is "videotaped evidence" that "sheds real doubt" on the allegations against his client.
Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo told reporters during his Monday press conference that Peppers would be allowed in the team's facilities until they had more information about the situation or the league said otherwise.
"As we gather information, he can definitely be in the building," Mayo said. "We don't know enough to say he shouldn't be in the building."
Peppers didn't play in the Patriots' 15-10 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. He was on the injury report leading up to the game with a shoulder injury.
The 29-year-old Peppers is in his eighth NFL season (third with the Patriots). He signed a three-year, $24 million contract extension in July.
