Video: 2004 Red Sox Netflix Doc 'The Comeback' Hyped in Trailer Before Release Date
October 9, 2024
A trailer for the Netflix documentary, "The Comeback," regarding the 2004 World Series champion Boston Red Sox's postseason run dropped on Tuesday.
According to Netflix, "The three-episode series features exclusive interviews with players, including Pedro Martinez, David Ortiz, and Kevin Millar, as well as the team's former manager Terry Francona, former general manager and vice president Theo Epstein, and many others who made the 2004 win possible."
The 2004 Red Sox are the only team in MLB history to come back from a 3-0 deficit in a playoff series, doing so against the arch-rival New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series. That team also erased the infamous "Curse of the Bambino," ending an 86-year stretch without a World Series title.
The team finished 98-64, earned the American League wild card spot and immediately swept the Anaheim Angels in the AL Division Series, 3-0.
But then came the hated Yankees, who defeated the Red Sox four games to three in a dramatic and heartbreaking 2003 ALCS.
Boston's season looked over after a 19-8 home loss to the Yankees in Game 3. One night later, the Red Sox trailed the Yankees 4-3 in the bottom of the ninth inning with future Hall of Fame closer Mariano Rivera on the mound. But a Bill Mueller RBI single (following a Dave Roberts stolen base) tied the game before David Ortiz smacked a two-run homer in the bottom of the 12th for a 6-4 victory.
The drama continued for Game 5 as the Red Sox overcame a 4-2 deficit in the eighth inning before winning 5-4 in 14 frames. Ortiz was a hero again, hitting a solo homer in the eighth before hitting the game-winning single in the 14th.
The "Bloody Sock" game was next, as Curt Schilling pitched through a torn tendon sheath to throw seven innings of one-run ball en route to a 4-2 win. Then the Red Sox emphatically crushed the Yanks 10-3 in Game 7 behind four home runs, including two from Johnny Damon.
Boston then cruised by the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series with a four-game sweep.
It was an incredible run for the Sox, who had an uneven first four months before rolling off a 42-18 finish from August 1 to the end of the regular season. Their playoff run will forever be immortalized, and now the series will drop on Netflix on Oct. 23.
