Russell Wilson 'Preparing to Get Ready to Go' as Steelers QB1 vs. Jets After Injury
October 17, 2024
All signs have pointed to Russell Wilson being named the Pittsburgh Steelers' starting quarterback for their game against the New York Jets on Sunday.
Now Wilson himself has provided word that he is "preparing to get ready to go" as the Steelers' QB1.
"I'm more myself physically, being up and running and all that stuff, so I feel good," Wilson said Thursday (h/t ESPN's Brooke Pryor).
"... You want to be able to move around, and obviously I've never really missed games before, so that's been a challenge in itself.
"It's been disappointing, but also I've grown a lot, too. I think that you realize that you just continue to love every day. You continue to find ways to lead, you continue to find ways to just embrace the challenges, the hard stuff, the obstacles in our way and everything else. And you look forward to the journey."
Wilson was named the Steelers' starter over Justin Fields this offseason but aggravated a training camp calf injury in early September. Fields took over and has led the Steelers to a 4-2 record.
However, Wilson is ready to return and will apparently take the reins Sunday. Per Pryor, Wilson has taken first-team reps in practice this week and has been first in the quarterback rotation in individual drills as well.
Wilson is taking over despite Fields faring well, accounting for 10 touchdowns (five passing, five rushing) and just two turnovers (one interception, one fumble lost). He's completed 66.3 percent of his passes for 1,106 yards while rushing for 231 yards on 55 attempts. Pittsburgh also just enjoyed its best game of the season, crushing the host Las Vegas Raiders 32-13.
But it's Wilson's show now. He has notably remained as the Steelers' No. 1 quarterback on the team's depth chart despite being off the field.
Last Sunday, Wilson was active for the first time all season, suiting up as the team's No. 2 signal-caller behind Fields. He logged full practices all week leading up to the Raiders game and isn't even on the practice report leading into the Jets game.
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin hasn't announced the starter yet, but Wilson should be calling the shots. Kickoff is set for 8:20 p.m. ET on Sunday at home in Acrisure Stadium against a 2-4 Jets team desperate to stop a three-game losing streak.
