Fantasy Football Big Board: Complete 2024 PPR Player Rankings Entering Week 8

We're now halfway through the 2024 regular season in the vast majority of fantasy football leagues. There's still a lot of football to be played, but camps are forming.

The happy camp is filled with managers who are 5-2 or better. They have avoided injuries, hit on early draft picks like Baltimore Ravens running back Derrick Henry and nabbed a value or two like Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Darnell Mooney. Nothing is guaranteed, but they are well-positioned for the playoffs.

There's also a decidedly unhappy camp of teams 2-5 or worse. Everything that could go wrong has. Their quarterbacks have scuffled. Their running backs got hurt. Their wide receivers aren't producing. They are trying to keep hope alive, but it ain't easy.

Then there are the middle-grounders sitting at 3-4 or 4-3. There has been some good and some bad. Big wins and bad beats. They are still in the hunt, but with not much margin for error.

Whichever camp you belong to, every fantasy manager wants a win in Week 8. This column aims to assist you in getting one, with position-by-position PPR rankings, some matchups to target and avoid and a look at the top 100 overall players for Week 8.

Quarterbacks

1 of 6

    Patrick Mahomes
    Patrick MahomesMichael Owens/Getty Images

In the long ago days of 2022, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw for a league-leading and career-high 5,250 yards.

At his current per-game pace in 2024, it would take Mahomes 23 games to equal that feat.

The Chiefs are the only undefeated team in the NFL, but Mahomes' arm hasn't been the engine for that success. After throwing for only 154 yards with no touchdowns in Sunday's win over the San Francisco 49ers, Mahomes is averaging a career-low 231.5 passing yards per game. He has two more interceptions than touchdown passes and is averaging just one scoring throw per game.

For the season, Mahomes ranks 22nd in fantasy points among quarterbacks. That puts him behind the likes of Daniel Jones of the New York Giants and Trevor Lawrence of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

That's not exactly what fantasy managers were expecting when they drafted Mahomes inside the top five at his position.

    GOOD MATCHUPS

Jordan Love, Green Bay Packers (at JAX) [DraftKings DFS Value: $7,100]

Love has been highly productive on a per-game basis. He's averaging three touchdown passes per start and ranks inside the top five at the position in fantasy points per game. Love should have another big outing in Week 8, as the Jaguars are among the worst pass defenses in the league. They're allowing 273.9 yards through the air per contest.

C.J. Stroud, Houston Texans (vs. IND) [DraftKings DFS Value: $6,900]

Stroud's Week 7 performance against the Green Bay Packers was forgettable. He threw for a career-low 86 yards at Lambeau Field. The second-year pro should rebound at home this week against the Colts, as Indianapolis ranks just outside the top 10 in fantasy points per game allowed to quarterbacks this year.

    BAD MATCHUPS

Trevor Lawrence, Jacksonville Jaguars (vs. GB) [DraftKings DFS Value: $5,600]

The Jaguars showed some signs of life in London last week, but even in that contest, Lawrence failed to clear 200 passing yards and managed only one touchdown pass. Things aren't going to get better against a Packers defense that just put the clamps on Stroud.

Kyler Murray, Arizona Cardinals (at MIA) [DraftKings DFS Value $6,400]

Murray has been up and down this season, and Week 8 features another bad matchup for the 27-year-old. No team has allowed fewer fantasy points per game to quarterbacks this year than Miami. The Dolphins are surrendering fewer than nine points per game to the position.

    SLEEPER

Jameis Winston, Cleveland Browns (vs. BAL) [DraftKings DFS Value: $5,200]

Winston was relegated to No. 3 quarterback duties last week, but he wound throwing Cleveland's only touchdown pass after Deshaun Watson tore his Achilles and Dorian Thompson-Robinson hurt his finger. That leaves Winston as the proverbial last man standing when the Browns face a Ravens team Sunday that can be thrown on.

Running Backs

2 of 6

    Saquon Barkley
Saquon BarkleyKyle Ross/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

They say that revenge is a dish best served cold. Saquon Barkley of the Philadelphia Eagles was positively frigid Sunday.

Playing against his old team for the first time, Barkley steamrolled the New York Giants to the tune of 176 rushing yards and a touchdown on just 17 carries.

After the game, Barkley told reporters that he was just glad his first trip back to MetLife Stadium was behind him.

"To be honest, I'm so happy this game's over," Barkley said. "I don't think I should get—besides today—any more questions about the Giants. But like I always said, I'm thankful for that organization. They're the team that drafted me. I still got nothing but love and respect for all the guys over there, but I'm happy to be an Eagle."

Barkley has been a smash in his first season with the Eagles. He's averaging almost 110 rushing yards per game, and among running backs with at least 100 carries, his 6.1 yards per tote leads the NFC.

    GOOD MATCHUPS

De'Von Achane, Miami Dolphins (vs. ARI) [DraftKings DFS Value: $6,200]

There's hope that Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (concussion) will return to action in Week 8, which is good news for the entire Miami offense. What's also good news for Achane is a matchup with a leaky Arizona run defense that's allowing 139.6 rushing yards per game.

Javonte Williams, Denver Broncos (vs. CAR) [DraftKings DFS Value: $6,000]

Williams is coming off his best game of the season. He had 14 carries for 88 yards and two touchdowns in a blowout win over the New Orleans Saints. The Carolina Panthers have been dreadful against the run this season, surrendering a league-worst 162.1 yards per game on the ground, which should have him set up for another productive day.

    BAD MATCHUPS

Nick Chubb, Cleveland Browns (vs. BAL) [DraftKings DFS Value: $6,100]

Chubb found the end zone last week in his 2024 debut, but he also averaged only two yards per carry. The Cleveland offense is hot garbage right now, and the Ravens have spent most of this season as the hardest team in the NFL to run the ball against.

Tony Pollard, Tennessee Titans (at DET) [DraftKings DFS Value: $6,500]

Pollard is one of the few players on the Titans offense who has been marginally effective this season, ranking among the top 25 fantasy running backs in PPR points per game. However, the Lions have been stout on the ground this season. They're allowing fewer than 95 rushing yards per game and are a bottom-five fantasy matchup for running backs.

    SLEEPER

Samaje Perine, Kansas City Chiefs (at LV) [DraftKings DFS Value: $4,800]

Kareem Hunt has seized control of the Kansas City backfield, but Perine could see some passing-down work or mop-up duty if (when?) the game gets out of hand. The Chiefs like to target running backs near the goal line as well. Don't be surprised if Perine punches paydirt Sunday. (How's that for alliteration?)

    WEEK 8 RUNNING BACK RANKINGS

Wide Receivers

3 of 6

    Amari Cooper
    Amari CooperTimothy T Ludwig/Getty Images

A pair of big-name wide receivers changed teams last week, with Davante Adams joining the New York Jets and Amari Cooper heading to the Buffalo Bills.

Their debuts went quite a bit differently.

Adams was targeted nine times in his Jets debut by former longtime teammate Aaron Rodgers, but he hauled in only three of those targets for 30 yards. Cooper wasn't targeted as often in Buffalo's blowout of the Tennessee Titans, but he made the most of those looks with four receptions for 66 yards and a touchdown.

Quarterback Josh Allen told reporters that he was impressed by his first game with Cooper.

"I think being seven years in the league now, just like understanding guys of [Cooper's] caliber, they don't need a lot," Allen said. "They go out there, give him a clear mind, let him go play. That's what he did out there a couple times, just finding zones, finding windows. Just the professionalism that he has, the ability that he has, just trusting what I see with him, and things will turn out pretty good."

Adams' numbers will improve (quite possibly at Garrett Wilson's expense), but Round 1 of the wide receiver switcheroo went to Cooper.

    GOOD MATCHUPS

Tyreek Hill, Miami Dolphins (vs. ARI) [DraftKings DFS Value: $7,000]

The absence of Tua Tagovailoa has decimated the fantasy value of both Hill and Jaylen Waddle. But if Tagovailoa returns to the lineup Sunday against the Cardinals, expect the 2-4 Dolphins to put their foot to the floor offensively. That should benefit both Hill and Waddle, both of whom need a big game in the worst way.

Jayden Reed, Green Bay Packers (at JAX) [DraftKings DFS Value: $6,700]

Reed was practically invisible last week against the Houston Texans, making only two catches on four targets for 10 yards. His ankle injury might have played a part, as could the crowded wide receiver room in Green Bay. But whatever the reason, Week 8's matchup with Jacksonville's porous pass defense sets him up well for a rebound.

    BAD MATCHUPS

Marvin Harrison Jr., Arizona Cardinals (at MIA) [DraftKings DFS Value: $6,800]

There hasn't been much middle ground with Harrison this season. He has either posted big numbers or been a non-factor from week-to-week. Week 8 unfortunately sets up as the latter. Seven weeks into the season, no team has given up fewer fantasy points per game to wide receivers this season than the Dolphins.

Chris Olave, New Orleans Saints (at LAC) [DraftKings DFS Value: $6,400]

Olave was already having a disappointing season before Derek Carr got hurt and he missed time with a concussion. Now Spencer Rattler is injured as well, and the New Orleans offense is in absolute free fall. Throw in a bottom-five fantasy matchup for wide receivers with the Chargers, and Olave's down 2024 campaign likely won't be turning around in Week 8.

    SLEEPER

Jerry Jeudy, Cleveland Browns (vs. BAL) [DraftKings DFS Value: $4,800]

Jeudy's first game as Cleveland's presumed No. 1 wide receiver was very, well, Cleveland. He finished with one reception for 18 yards on four targets. But that was mostly with Dorian Thompson-Robinson throwing the ball everywhere but at his intended target. With Jameis Winston drawing the start Sunday (as he should), Jeudy could be in for a big game against a beatable Baltimore secondary.

Tight Ends

4 of 6

    Sam LaPorta
    Sam LaPortaDavid Berding/Getty Images

Paging Sam LaPorta. Sam LaPorta, please pick up the Honolulu Blue courtesy phone.

As a rookie last season, LaPorta caught 86 passes for 889 yards and 10 touchdowns. In terms of PPR points, he was the highest-scoring tight end in fantasy football. In quite a few drafts in 2024, LaPorta was the first tight end selected.

Things have not gone at all as planned.

Six games into the season, LaPorta is averaging 15 fewer receiving yards per game than he did as a rookie. After amassing 120 targets last season, LaPorta is averaging fewer than three a game in 2024. He has found the end zone just once. And LaPorta is 21th in PPR points among tight ends, behind the likes of Jonnu Smith of the Miami Dolphins and Noah Fant of the Seattle Seahawks.

There's no easy fix in sight for LaPorta, either. Amon-Ra St. Brown is going to get his, obviously. But as Jameson Williams has emerged in the Detroit offense, LaPorta's target share has shrunk. He's been targeted five times in a game just once, and he has only one catch in each of the past two games.

Williams' two-game suspension might cause a temporary spike in LaPorta's targets. But if that occurs, the best bet may well be to try to trade him while LaPorta's value is at his highest.

Because the odds he's going to come close to backing up his 2023 numbers in the second half of the season are LaNotGood.

    GOOD MATCHUPS

Brock Bowers, Las Vegas Raiders (vs. KC) [DraftKings DFS Value: $6,100]

Were the wide receivers in San Francisco not such a mess, Bowers would be the TE1 this week. The rookie probably is for the rest of the season. But he's the No. 1 pass-catcher in the Las Vegas offense right now, and no team in the league is giving up more PPR points per game to tight ends in 2024 than the Chiefs.

Dalton Kincaid, Buffalo (at SEA) [DraftKings DFS Value: $4,900]

Even with the Bills' issues at wide receiver, Kincaid has been so-so for fantasy managers this year, and Amari Cooper's arrival doesn't help matters much. But Kincaid remains toward the back end of the top 10, and this week, he faces a Seattle Seahawks team surrendering the eighth-most PPR points per game to tight ends this year.

    BAD MATCHUPS

Sam LaPorta, Detroit Lions (vs. TEN) [DraftKings DFS Value: $4,800]

This may seem a bit like piling on. But while the Titans are a bad team, their defense is actually quite good, especially against the pass. No team in the AFC has given up fewer PPR points per game to tight ends this year, and this contest's game script could see a cruising Lions team take their foot off the gas in the second half.

Isaiah Likely, Baltimore Ravens (at CLE) [DraftKings DFS Value: $4,300]

Having two quality receiving tight ends is a good problem for the Ravens to have. But Baltimore isn't the most pass-wacky team to begin with, and target shares for Likely and Mark Andrews has been inconsistent this season. The Cleveland Browns haven't done much well this season, but limiting fantasy output from opposing tight ends has been one of them.

    SLEEPER

Noah Fant, Seattle Seahawks (vs. BUF) [DraftKings DFS Value: $3,700]

Fant is what he is—a talented player who has been a wildly inconsistent fantasy option for most of his career. But Fant has quietly posted double-digit PPR points in each of his last two games, and with the DK Metcalf injury, Fant could be in for a bump in targets. This year at tight end, any sliver of good news is something to cling to.

Kickers and Team Defenses

5 of 6

    Ivan Pace Jr.
    Ivan Pace Jr.Kevin Sabitus/Getty Images

The Purple People Eaters are back, baby!

    Well, for fantasy managers, anyway.

From an NFL perspective, the Minnesota Vikings are an average defense at best. After losing their first game of the season Sunday to the Detroit Lions, the Vikings are 20th in the league in total defense. They also have the worst pass defense in the NFC.

But in the categories that matter most to fantasy managers, the Vikings have excelled. For all the yards that the Vikes have given up, they're surrendering only 17.8 points per game even after Detroit dropped 31 on them. The Vikings have amassed 24 sacks—third-most in the league. Only the Green Bay Packers have more takeaways than Minnesota's 14. And the Vikings have scored three defensive touchdowns, including a scoop-and-score by linebacker Ivan Pace Jr. against the Lions.

Add it all together, and you have the highest-scoring defense in fantasy football and a unit averaging 14.5 fantasy points per game.

So long as those big plays keep coming, the Vikings can surrender a million yards. Although they would really rather not.

    GOOD MATCHUPS

Chase McLaughlin, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (vs. ATL)

In many respects, McLaughlin is exactly what fantasy managers should look for in a kicker. He's accurate. He has a strong leg. And he faces an Atlanta Falcons team this week that's leading the league in fantasy points per game given up to kickers.

Detroit Lions Defense (vs. TEN) [DraftKings DFS Value : $3,800]

The Lions were able to overcome the loss of edge-rusher Aidan Hutchinson at least for a week, sacking Sam Darnold four times in last week's big win over the Vikings. The Lions are a hard team to run the ball on, the Titans have no passing game to speak of, and no team has given up more fantasy points per game to defenses this season.

    BAD MATCHUPS

Cairo Santos, Chicago Bears (at WAS)

Santos has been OK for the Bears this season, but he's hitting on just 80 percent of his field goal attempts, has only 10 tries in six games and faces a Commanders team in Week 8 that's giving up the seventh-fewest fantasy points per game to kickers this season.

Philadelphia Eagles Defense (at CIN) [DraftKings DFS Value: $3,100]

The Eagles are coming off their best defensive effort of the season in last week's blowout win over the New York Giants. But while the Cincinnati offense has been inconsistent this season, it hasn't translated to fantasy points for opposing defenses. The Bengals are 27th in that regard on a points-per-game basis.

    SLEEPER

Cincinnati Bengals Defense (vs. PHI) [DraftKings DFS Value: $2,800]

The Bengals haven't played especially well defensively this season—at least not consistently. And the Eagles offense might not appear like a team to target in fantasy. But Philly has actually been a favorable matchup for defenses so far this season. If you need a waiver pickup or cheap DFS play, Cincy could be sneaky effective.

Top 100 Players Overall/'Flex' Rankings

Before we get to the top 100 overall players for PPR fantasy football leagues in Week 8 (a list that can aid with "flex" lineup decisions), a couple of quick notes—same as always.

The first is the same as always—there are no quarterbacks listed here. If your fantasy league has a "superflex" spot, then if you have a viable QB2, he should be in that spot. Of course, given how strange this season has been at the quarterback position, the definition of "viable" has become somewhat fungible.

There are no byes this week, so we at least have a full slate of players to choose from. Seven weeks in, that can mean vastly different things to different teams. But regardless of whether you are 2-5 or 5-2, keep chugging along. Don't get frustrated. Or complacent.

Stack a few wins, and you can right back in it. Lose a few, and suddenly that playoff spot you thought you had locked up isn't so certain.

Whether things look bright or bleak right now, there's still half of a season to play.
