Big Ten to Probe Michigan-MSU Fight Video and Kalel Mullings Stomping Player, Staffer
October 28, 2024
The Big Ten is investigating the fight between Michigan State players and Michigan players at the end of Saturday's game between the two rivals, per ESPN's Adam Rittenberg.
Michigan State athletic director Alan Haller reportedly has already been in contact with the conference over the fracas that occurred after the Wolverines closed out a 24-17 win.
Per Chris Solari of the Detroit Free Press, Spartans head coach Jonathan Smith said a Michigan State player and staff member were in a pile where Michigan running back Kalel Mullings was seen on video stomping. Smith added that the Big Ten will be examining that video and Mullings' actions as well.
The incident occurred after the Wolverines took their final kneel-down to seal the win when Spartans defensive lineman Anthony Jones and Wolverines tight end Colston Loveland began scuffling, which then drew both teams from the sidelines to the middle of the field.
"I haven't thoroughly looked at every angle and all of that," Smith said Monday. "It was a lot of bodies out there. ... Yes, we had a staff member that was in the fray of it and a player that was in the fray of it, and that's what we're hoping [the Big Ten] is looking into."
Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore echoed Smith's sentiments, calling the incident "unacceptable." He added that any discipline for Wolverines players would be handled internally.
"That's not how we represent the University of Michigan, the block M or the winged helmet," Moore said. "So we'll take care of that. That will never happen again."
When asked whether he saw Mullings kicking or stomping anyone from Michigan State, Moore said, "No. We'll handle it."
This isn't the first time that Michigan and Michigan State have been involved in a post-game incident. Two years ago, seven Spartans players faced criminal charges stemming from their involvement in a fight with Wolverines players in the tunnel of Michigan Stadium, with one facing a felony assault charge. The Big Ten fined Michigan State $10,000 and suspended on Spartans player for eight games on top of the school's discipline.
Smith, who is in his first year as head coach of Michigan State, said he has now learned just how deep the rivalry is against Michigan.
"There's a genuine dislike," he said. "You could feel that from the get-go of pregame, from the crowd to the place and then sharing the tunnel, so that's unique in a rivalry."
