Jets' Malachi Corley Trolled By NFL Fans After Dropping Ball for Touchback vs. Texans
November 1, 2024
Malachi Corley made one of the worst mistakes a player can make in the New York Jets' matchup with the Houston Texans on Thursday.
The receiver took a pitch from Aaron Rodgers through the Texans defense and appeared to have an easy touchdown, but celebrated prematurely and dropped the ball before he was in the endzone. Subsequently, New York's first touchdown of the game was called back and Houston got the ball.
NFL @NFLWhat we thought was a Jets TD... is a touchback! Houston ball 😳<a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/HOUvsNYJ?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#HOUvsNYJ</a> on Prime Video<br>Also streaming on <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/NFLPlus?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#NFLPlus</a> <a href="https://t.co/D3liGAROrt">pic.twitter.com/D3liGAROrt</a>
After the error, fans trolled Corley on social media.
Corley, a third-round pick in the 2024 NFL draft out of Western Kentucky, hasn't seen much action so far this season. Coming into Thursday's game, he had just one reception for four yards and no other touches.
On his second career touch, he made a drastic mistake that cost him his first touchdown. Considering the Jets hadn't used him much in the offense before, his chances of getting more playing time likely decreased after the fumble.
In some ways, the play was a perfect example of how the Jets season has gone so far. They had plenty of hype coming into the year, but are off to a rough 2-6 start and have dropped five consecutive games.
Corley had a chance to give New York an early lead, but instead left the Jets with nothing to show for their drive. The next time Corley finds himself headed toward the end zone—if there is a next time—he'll likely wait to celebrate until after he's confirmed he has a touchdown.
