Texas Tech Thrills Patrick Mahomes, CFB Fans in Upset Win over Undefeated No. 11 ISU
November 3, 2024
Texas Tech secured an upset victory over No. 11 Iowa State with a late go-ahead touchdown on Saturday, winning by the final score of 23-22.
The Red Raiders improved to 6-3 while handing the Cyclones their first loss of the season.
With Texas Tech trailing by five points and less than 30 seconds left in the fourth quarter, running back Tahj Brooks found the end zone on a five-yard rush.
While the two-point conversion was unsuccessful, head coach Joey McGuire's team was able to prevent Iowa State from scoring on the ensuing drive to earn the win. Brooks finished with 122 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries.
Fans and players alike were amazed by the result, including Kansas City Chiefs superstar and former Red Raiders quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
With the win, the Red Raiders became bowl-eligible for the fourth consecutive season and will make their third straight bowl appearance under McGuire. It was an important win for Texas Tech's defense, as the team was coming off a two-game losing streak in which it allowed 94 total points.
After narrowly escaping with a win against UCF to improve to 7-0 on Oct. 19, Iowa State's undefeated start to the season has come to an end.
