After inserting himself firmly into the NFL MVP race with 146 rushing yards and two touchdowns in the Philadelphia Eagles' 26-18 win over the Washington Commanders on Thursday, Saquon Barkley is on pace to earn himself extra money from incentives in his contract.

Per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo, Barkley's deal includes a $13.5 million base salary this season plus an additional $3 million in individual and team incentives that are within reach.

Here is a breakdown of the incentives in Barkley's deal:

  • $250,000 for 1,500 combined rushing and receiving yards
  • $250,000 for 2,000 combined rushing and receiving yards
  • $500,000 for All-Pro first-team selection
  • $250,000 for All-Pro second-team or Pro Bowl selection
  • $250,000 if the Eagles win the NFC Championship Game
  • $250,000 if the Eagles win the Super Bowl

Of those incentives, the 1,500 combined rushing and receiving yards seems like a lock. Barkley leads the NFL with 1,347 yards from scrimmage already with seven games remaining.

At his current pace of 134.7 scrimmage yards per game, Barkley could get to 1,500 yards within the next two games. The 2,000-yard incentive is also within reach.

Barkley is on pace for 2,290 yards from scrimmage if he plays all 17 games. That would be the 11th-highest single-season total in NFL history.

Eagles general manager Howie Roseman broke from his usual method of team building to sign Barkley to a three-year, $37.8 million contract in free agency.

They had spent the second-lowest amount of money on running backs and racked up the third-most rushing yards in a six-season span from 2017 to '22, per Reuben Frank of NBC Sports Philadelphia.

Barkley has been one of the main driving forces pushing the Eagles to the top of the NFC East and in the mix for the No. 1 seed in the entire conference. He is a safe bet to earn one of the two spots on the All-Pro team, and would probably be the favorite for the first-team at this point.

Given how well the Eagles are playing on both sides of the ball right now, it wouldn't be a surprise if Barkley also earns one of the two incentives for reaching the Super Bowl or winning the Super Bowl.

Philadelphia has won six straight games with an offense and defense that rank in the top seven in points per game.

The MVP is a very difficult award for anyone who isn't a quarterback to win. Adrian Peterson in 2012 was the last non-quarterback to be named MVP. Lamar Jackson is having another incredible season and seems on track to win the award for the third time.

Barkley will get his chance to prove his MVP bonafides against Jackson when the Eagles and Baltimore Ravens play at M&T Bank Stadium on Dec. 1.
