NFL Rumors: Bill Belichick 'Certainly Has His Eye' on Jaguars Job Ahead of Offseason
November 19, 2024
There's an expectation that Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson won't be back next year, and it sounds like a coaching legend is interested in replacing him.
During this week's episode of Scoop City, The Athletic's Dianna Russini reported that former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick could target the Jaguars if they part ways with Pederson.
"Let's get into this because there's a lot of chatter about Bill Belichick taking that job," Russini said around the 16:50 mark. "I can tell you that Belichick certainly has his eye on this Jacksonville opening."
However, Belichick's interest in joining the Jaguars would appear to raise questions about general manager Trent Baalke's job security. Russini reported on Monday that it's "highly unlikely that a partnership" between Belichick and Baalke would happen.
Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated echoed those sentiments, adding that it would take wholesale changes in Jacksonville if the franchise hopes to land the six-time Super Bowl champion head coach.
"I think the Jags legitimately have a solid job to sell here. But that's only so if they reset in the front office, the same way they will on the coaching staff," Breer stated.
Belichick, who is spending the 2024 season as a broadcaster after going unhired last offseason following his departure from the Patriots, will be one of the most coveted names on the coaching market in the next few months. The 72-year-old is widely regarded as one of the greatest coaches of all time, so he would be an instant difference-maker in Jacksonville.
The Jags are in the midst of a disappointing 2-9 season, leading many to believe that Pederson's days at the helm are numbered. He hasn't been able to get the best out of star quarterback Trevor Lawrence this year, so it wouldn't be a surprise if the team went in a different direction.
Jacksonville will be on a bye this week before it tries to end a four-game losing streak when it faces the Houston Texans in an AFC South matchup on Dec. 1.
