NFL Rumors: Drew Brees, Scott Hanson Eyed by Netflix for Christmas Day Coverage
December 5, 2024
Netflix is reportedly "in talks" to add NFL RedZone host Scott Hanson and former NFL quarterback Drew Brees to its NFL doubleheader coverage on Christmas day, according to Mike McCarthy of Front Office Sports.
Netflix will be exclusively streaming the Kansas City Chiefs vs. Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens vs. Houston Texans matchups.
According to McCarthy, Hanson and Brees will "contribute to Netflix's international coverage" of the two games.
Brees previously worked for NBC following his playing career, working NFL and Notre Dame games in 2021, but didn't stick in the role for long. He told Front Office Sports earlier this year, however, that he would be interested in returning to the announcing booth.
"I think I could be the absolute best at it, if given the opportunity," he said. "I valued my time at NBC so much, for that year after I played, I spent most of that time in-studio on Sunday Night Football, having to work with some incredible people. ... But I didn't really get the chance to broadcast NFL games. And that's what I feel like I'm most qualified to do. That's what I feel like I'm most passionate about. And certainly where my knowledge base lies, right? Telling the story of the game, getting you inside the huddle, getting you inside the quarterback's head, letting you know how we're attacking this defense."
As for the broadcast booths in the United States' streams, play-by-play announcer Ian Eagle will be joined by Nate Burleson and J.J. Watt for the Chiefs-Steelers game. All three are currently employed by CBS Sports.
Noah Eagle, meanwhile, will call the Ravens-Texans contest alongside analyst Greg Olsen. Noah Eagle currently works Big 10 football, the NFL and Olympics for NBC, while Olsen works for Fox Sports.
Netflix has cast a wide net while attempting to fill out its broadcast. According to Ryan Glasspiegel of the New York Post, the streaming giant is also "targeting ESPN NFL analyst Mina Kimes for a role in its studio show for the Christmas Day doubleheader."
He noted that ESPN would give Kimes their blessing to do Netflix's broadcast if she were so inclined.
Glasspiegel also reported in September that Netflix was trying to bring aboard Up & Adams host Kay Adams to serve as its studio anchor for the games. It is unclear if she will be joining the broadcast in any capacity.
Netflix is the latest streaming platform to enter the NFL mix. Amazon Prime already broadcasts Thursday Night Football, while Sunday Night Football is available on NBC's Peacock.
