One of the best defensive players in all of college football is set to take his talents to the next level.

Per ESPN's Jordan Reid, Michigan cornerback Will Johnson officially declared for the 2025 NFL draft on Wednesday. B/R's NFL Scouting Department ranked Johnson as the No. 5 overall prospect in its latest 2025 draft big board.

Johnson was limited to six games this season while battling a toe injury and he hasn't taken the field since Oct. 19. After declaring for the draft, it would be a surprise if he chose to suit up for Michigan when it faces Alabama in the ReliaQuest Bowl on Dec. 31.

In three seasons with the Wolverines, Johnson undoubtedly made his mark as one of the best defensive backs in program history. The junior racked up 68 total tackles, 11 passes defended and nine interceptions, which included a program-record three pick-sixes.

Johnson earned first-team All-American honors and was a consensus first-team All-Big Ten selection following his sophomore year. He was named defensive MVP in Michigan's national title win against Washington last season. He also had the honor of being the highest-rated player in NCAA Football 25 prior to its release on July 19.

In his evaluation of Johnson, B/R NFL Scout Cory Giddings praised him for his combination of size, physicality and skills at the cornerback position.

"Johnson has the ideal frame for an NFL cornerback, complemented by a filled-out build that enhances his ability to compete at a high level," Giddings stated. "His performance in both man and zone coverage and his versatility and aggressive playing style make him a highly-regarded prospect for the 2025 NFL Draft."

In his latest mock draft on Wednesday, ESPN's Field Yates predicted that Johnson would land with the Jacksonville Jaguars with the No. 8 pick.

Whichever team that selects Johnson will be getting a shutdown cornerback who can be an anchor on defense for years to come.
