NFL News: Brian Callahan Reportedly Expected to Return as Titans HC amid 3-12 Record
December 28, 2024
Despite winning only three of their first 15 games this season, the Tennessee Titans are reportedly expected to bring back Brian Callahan as head coach next season.
According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport, it is anticipated that Callahan and "the bulk of his staff" will return in 2025, although some staff changes are possible.
Callahan, 40, is a first-year head coach after spending the previous five seasons as the Cincinnati Bengals' offensive coordinator.
For much of his tenure in Cincinnati, Callahan had the benefit of coaching an offense headlined by quarterback Joe Burrow, running back Joe Mixon and wide receivers Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins.
As a result, the Bengals had a top-10 scoring offense in both 2021 and 2022, and they reached the Super Bowl in 2021.
Callahan had much less to work with in Tennessee this season, and the Titans' record has reflected that fact.
Quarterback play has been a significant issue, and it has forced Callahan to shift between Will Levis and Mason Rudolph as the starter. Levis is 2-9 and has completed 63.7 percent of his passes for 1,916 yards, 12 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, while Rudolph is 1-3 and has completed 63.8 percent of his passing attempts for 1,267 yards, eight touchdowns and eight picks.
The Titans have had a couple of bright spots on offense in the form of a pair of free-agent signings, though. Running back Tony Pollard has rushed for 1,017 yards and five touchdowns, and wideout Calvin Ridley is the team's leading receiver with 56 catches for 857 yards and four scores.
Tennessee's defense has been respectable, ranking third in the NFL in total yardage allowed, which suggests a solution at quarterback could be all the Titans need to return to prominence.
Entering play Saturday, the Titans were positioned to pick fourth in the 2025 NFL draft with a 3-12 record. Of the three teams ahead of them, only the New York Giants need a quarterback.
That means the Titans could in line to land Colorado's Shedeur Sanders, Miami's Cam Ward or another quarterback with their first-round pick should they choose to go that route.
If Callahan and the Tennessee front office are not enamored with the draft options, there could be some intriguing possibilities available in free agency, headlined by current Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold.
Given Callahan's history of offensive success in Cincinnati, it would make sense for the Titans to hold off judgment on the head coach until he gets the opportunity to utilize a quarterback who he had a hand in drafting or signing.
