Photo: Jaguars Fan Calls for GM Trent Baalke's Firing with Airplane Banner
December 29, 2024
Jacksonville Jaguars fans are fed up amid the team's 3-12 record, and general manager Trent Baalke is the latest figure to earn their ire.
One such fan took to the skies to express that frustration, flying a banner calling for Baalke's dismissal near EverBank Stadium on Sunday ahead of the team's matchup against the Tennessee Titans.
Can you blame Jaguars fans for that level of discontent?
The team has just two winning seasons—going 9-8 in both 2022 and 2023—and one playoff appearance since hiring Baalke as the director of player personnel in Feb. 2020 and promoting him to general manager a year later.
His major moves haven't exactly panned out. Trevor Lawrence has yet to prove he can consistently lead a franchise to the playoffs. In Baalke's defense, Lawrence was the consensus top overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft; in Lawerence's defense, Baalke hasn't exactly surrounded him with the most talented roster.
The Jaguars also made a flurry of moves in free agency ahead of the 2024 season, signing defensive lineman Arik Armstead, wideout Gabe Davis, center Mitch Morse and defensive backs Ronald Darby and Darnell Savage, among other moves.
Armstead has two sacks and three tackles for loss in 15 games this season. Davis has 20 catches for 239 yards and two touchdowns. Savage and Darby have combined for one interception.
One of the trends of the Baalke era has been giving above-market deals for players who don't quite produce to that level. Christian Kirk is a good example. The Jaguars signed him to a four-year, $72 million deal back in 2022, and while he had a solid first year with the team (84 catches for 1,108 yards and eight touchdowns), he's been far less impactful since.
Anyway you slice it, the Baalke era hasn't been fruitful for the Jaguars. Whether he's one of the casualties of a brutal 2024 season, however, remains to be seen.
