Eagles Rumors: Nick Sirianni's Status Eyed by Insiders If HC Has Early Playoff Exit
January 2, 2025
Despite having led the Philadelphia Eagles to the playoffs in each of his first four seasons, head coach Nick Sirianni could end up on the hot seat if the team doesn't make a deep run.
Per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, some people around the NFL think Sirianni's job could be in jeopardy if the Eagles lose in the first round of the postseason.
There were a lot of questions about Sirianni's future at the end of last season and coming into the start of this season.
When the Eagles made significant changes to the coaching staff last offseason, there was a feeling that general manager Howie Roseman was the one in control of hiring Kellen Moore as offensive coordinator and Vic Fangio as defensive coordinator.
Roseman denied the implication, noting all of the moves made by the organization are a collaborative effort that Sirianni was involved in.
Fowler, Don Van Natta Jr. and Seth Wickersham reported in April that the Eagles were among the teams that discussed hiring Belichick, but they "still strongly believed" in Sirianni when they decided to bring him back.
The once-frosty relationship between Sirianni and Jalen Hurts appears to be in a better place this season.
"We are the two leaders of the team," Hurts told reporters on Oct. 10 when asked about Sirianni. "I'm happy and fortunate that we were able to come together in harmony and have the same goal in mind and try to get this thing right. I got a ton of confidence in him.
Sirianni's current contract runs through the 2025 season, so it wouldn't be an exorbitant cost to the Eagles if they were to fire him and bring in a new coach if they were to go in that direction.
The Eagles are locked into the No. 2 seed in the NFC playoffs. They will play either the Washington Commanders or Green Bay Packers in the wild-card round. Green Bay is currently the No. 7 seed, but could move up a spot with a win and a Commanders loss in Week 18.
Since Sirianni's first season as head coach in 2021, the Eagles' 48 wins are the third-most in the NFL. His .701 winning percentage is the fifth-highest mark in NFL history.
