Jayden Daniels, Commanders Triumph over Bucs Secondary

The average NFL team scrambled on 5.5 percent of their dropbacks in 2024, per Buccaneers.com's Scott Smith.

The Washington Commanders, meanwhile, scrambled on 12.5 percent.

That league-high number is thanks in large part to rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, who has been keeping Commanders plays alive all season with his ability to run under pressure.

The Buccaneers allowed 138 rushing yards from the Commanders during their Week 1 win over Washington, but Tampa Bay has tightened up its run defense since then. After deciding to refocus on the unit after their Week 11 bye, per Smith, the Bucs have held opponents to fewer than 100 rushing yards in seven straight games.

That streak may be difficult to maintain heading into the postseason, especially given the recent injuries that have tested the depth of the Tampa Bay secondary. Safety Antoine Winfield Jr. and cornerback Jamel Dean are coming off injuries that sidelined them for the end of the regular season.

Todd Bowles calls blitzes more regularly than almost any other team in the NFL. It's safe to bet the Bucs will be looking to put as much pressure on Daniels as possible as they look to clamp down on his ability to scramble.

But given Daniels' development since Week 1 and the return of Austin Ekeler from injury, the Commanders could look to challenge Tampa Bay's run defense— while taking advantage of their struggles on pass defense— in order to advance to the divisional round for the first time since 2005.

Rams Defense Upsets Sam Darnold and the Vikings

The cracks began to show in the Minnesota Vikings' title hopes in Week 18.

Sam Darnold, who led the Vikings into the playoffs with a career season, was unable to overcome the Detroit Lions' stifling defense when playing for the NFC's top seed in the regular-season finale.

Darnold responded to the pressure by going 18-of-41 for just 166 yards. He missed multiple opportunities for touchdown passes as the Vikings completed four red-zone trips with just a pair of field goals to show for them.

The Rams defense put similar pressure on Darnold when these two teams met in Week 8. Los Angeles held the Rams to just 64 rushing yards, their second-lowest performance of the season, in the win.

There's a lot hinging on Monday's matchup for Darnold, whose next contract could be shaped by how deep he is able to lead the Vikings into the 2024 postseason. And Matthew Stafford and the Rams are going up against one of the best defenses in the league.

But the Vikings offensive line has struggled to protect Darnold from opponents' pass rushes throughout the season. If Rams defenders like Jared Verse are able to get through to Darnold, the pressure could allow the Rams a chance to make it past this contender and into the divisional round.
