Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula have gotten off to fantastic starts at the 2025 Australian Open.

The No. 3 and No. 7 seeds in the women's singles draw cruised into the third round on Wednesday with straight-set victories.

The two Americans are viewed as two of the top contenders for the title in Melbourne, and so far, they look like they have the form to make deep runs.

Gauff is searching for a second straight semifinal appearance down under, while Pegula is looking to make the quarterfinals for the fourth straight year.

The path looks clear, at least right now, for the two Americans to meet in the quarterfinals. If chalk holds in the bracket, the winner of that match would take on top seed Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinal.

Everything is going as planned in the men's singles bracket as well. Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic each picked up second-round victories on Wednesday to continue their collision course toward a quarterfinal matchup.

    Alejandro Davidovich Fokina def. No. 29 Felix Auger-Aliassime, 6-7 (7), 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-1, 6-3

Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic are headed toward a quarterfinal clash in Melbourne.

Alcaraz looked like the better player through two rounds, as he put together a pair of straight-set victories.

The third-seeded Spaniard lost just four games across three sets on Wednesday to set up a third-round matchup with Nuno Borges.

Djokovic once again needed four sets to move on. He dropped the second set in a tiebreak to Portuguese qualifier Jaime Faria. Djokovic responded with two strong sets to advance.

Alexander Zverev will likely be waiting for the Alcaraz-Djokovic winner in the semifinal. He cruised into the third round with his second straight-set victory of the tournament.

Zverev's path to the semifinal got more wide open on Wednesday after No. 6 sed Casper Ruud fell in four sets to Jakub Mensik. Ruud now has three straight exits in the second or third round in Australia.

American Tommy Paul benefited from Ruud's loss because no seeded players are left in his portion of the draw. The No. 12 seed should sail into the quarterfinals to face Zverev.

No. 30 Leylah Fernandez def. Cristina Bucsa, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4

Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula continued their strong starts with straight-set victories on Wednesday.

Pegula won the tougher matchup of the two against Elise Mertens, but now Gauff has the more challenging path to the quarterfinals.

Gauff faces 2021 U.S. Open runner-up Leylah Fernandez in the third round and then a showdown with Naomi Osaka potentially awaits in the fourth round.

Osaka, a four-time major champion on hard courts, knocked off No. 20 seed Karolina Muchova in three sets.

Pegula could end up facing two-time major quarterfinalist Paula Badosa in the fourth round. Pegula faces an unseeded foe in the third round.

Top seed Aryna Sabalenka is still the favorite to win the tournament. She picked up a second straight-set win in a row and a third two-set triumph is in the cards for the third round against an unseeded opponent.

Sabalenka is the two-time reigning champion in Australia and will be tough for Gauff, Pegula, Osaka or anyone else to take down if she is at her best in Melbourne once again.
