Report: Warriors' Jonathan Kuminga Could Be Out Until After NBA ASG Amid Ankle Injury
January 24, 2025
Jonathan Kuminga's recovery timeline from an ankle injury gained some clarity on Friday.
According to Anthony Slater of The Athletic, the Golden State Warriors forward "remains weeks away" from a return as his ankle is still wrapped and he hasn't advanced to any "real court work." Slater noted that Kuminga "could" come back after the All-Star break.
The 22-year-old suffered a sprained right ankle against the Memphis Grizzlies on Jan. 4 and has missed each of Golden State's past 10 games.
The Warriors have struggled without Kuminga, owning a 4-6 record over that 10-game span.
Per Slater, the former lottery pick has been around the rest of the team while he's recovering and is in "positive spirits."
Warriors head coach Steve Kerr previously provided an update on Kuminga during a Tuesday appearance on 95.7 The Game's Willard and Dibs show.
"[Kuminga's] progressing, but it was a pretty bad ankle sprain, and he hasn't been on the court yet or anything," Kerr said (h/t Taylor Wirth of NBC Sports Bay Area). "But he's getting rehab every day, and he's doing strength stuff and he's on the bike, so he's doing as well as possible. But he's nowhere close to being ready."
If Kuminga is ruled out until after the All-Star break, his first opportunity to come back will come against the Sacramento Kings on Feb. 21.
Despite alternating between the starting lineup and the bench, Kuminga was off to an encouraging start to his 2024-25 campaign. In 32 appearances, he averaged a career-high 16.8 points and 5.0 rebounds per game while shooting 45.9 percent from the field and 34.5 percent from three-point territory.
Kuminga also owns the fourth-best net rating among Warriors players to appear in at least 25 games this season (via NBA.com).
Golden State hasn't been able to build upon a 12-3 record to begin the year, currently sitting at 22-22 and owning the No. 11 spot in the Western Conference standings.
As the Warriors attempt to get back on track, they may be without Kuminga until the All-Star game concludes.
