The 2024-25 college football season ended on January 20, when Ohio State defeated Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff Championship Game. All eyes are now on next season, for which February 5 serves as an important date.

The regular national signing period is set to open on Wednesday. While most top high school recruits have already committed to their respective college programs—the early signing period came and went in early December—some top players remain available. Commitment changes could also occur.

For the most part, though, recruiting classes are largely set.

Here's how the top recruiting classes stack up heading into national signing day, along with a look at the top unsigned recruits and a few predictions.

Ty Haywood, 4-Star OT

Only three recruits ranked inside the top 125 of 247Sports' national rankings remain unsigned. 4-Star offensive tackle Ty Haywood of Ryan High School in Denton, Texas stands as the headliner of the unsigned group.

The 6'5", 285-pound blocker ranks 42nd on the national list and has all the physical tools needed to be a future star at the college level.

"Imposing offensive tackle with impressive length relative to height. Long-armed with a huge reach," Gabe Brooks of 247Sports wrote. "Gradually improved quickness off the ball throughout junior year and performed well on the elite camp circuit prior to senior season to ascend a loaded 2025 OT board."

Haywood was originally committed to Alabama but reversed course in mid-January. Shortly after that, he made a visit to Michigan, and the Wolverines are focused on bringing him into the fold.

"Haywood remains their top target heading into Wednesday's signing day," Ryan Zuke of MLive wrote on Monday.

There's always a chance that Haywood could change his mind again, but the prediction here is that he joins Michigan. The timing of his decommitment and subsequent visit to Ann Arbor suggests that Hayward already knows where he wants to play next.

Zahir Mathis, 4-Star Edge

Zahir Mathis is the other top-100 recruit who has yet to formally choose a college program. A 6'6", 225-pound edge prospect from the Imhotep Institute in Philadelphia, Mathis figures to be an early contributor to a college defense.

Mathis, 247Sports' 114th-ranked recruit, was committed to Ohio State but decommitted in November. The early signing period came and went, and Mathis has yet to sign with a new program—though he made clear his intention to wait until January.

I will not be signing the first signing period !!!!

His two most recent visits came with Florida State and Maryland—on January 10 and 31, respectively. According to Steve Wiltfong of On3, the Terrapins appear to have the edge.

"Following an official visit to Maryland this weekend the Terps have the momentum for four-star 2025 edge rusher Zahir Mathis," Wiltfong posted on X. "Florida State is still battling.

Mathis had been scheduled to visit Michigan but canceled those plans. He was set to reschedule, according to Ryan O'Bleness of Rivals, but that never materialized. This suggests that Mathis is prepared to choose between Florida State and Maryland.

A pivot back to Ohio State is also possible—especially after Mathis watched the Buckeyes win a national championship. However, the prediction here is that he becomes a Terrapin.

J'Vari Flowers, 4-Star CB

4-Star cornerback J'Vari Flowers is a new addition to the 2025 recruiting cycle. Originally a 2026 recruit, Flowers decided to reclassify to the 2025 class in January.

Flowers is already ranked as the 91st overall player in 247Sports' composite rankings. The former Northwestern (Miami) standout projects as a difference-making defender at the next level.

"Aggressive cover corner that could emerge as a real difference-maker in the slot with his physicality and twitch," Andrew Ivins of 247Sports wrote. "Has measured under 5-foot-11, but makes up for the lack of length with his foot speed and a thicker core."

Fans should not, however, expect to see Flowers choose his collegiate destination this week. According to Ryan Garcia Jr. of Rivals, the cornerback does not plan to commit as soon as the national signing period opens.

Flowers has received offers from Kentucky, Mississippi State, North Carolina and North Carolina State, among others. He has also visited Georgia and seemed to enjoy his time with the program.

"I loved every part of it, learned some great things from the coaches," Flowers said, per Wiltfong.

Could Flowers make a surprise decision and commit in the coming days after all? Of course, but the prediction here is that he allows the process to play out well into the spring. The Division 1 window isn't scheduled to close until April 1—though players are no longer required to sign a national letter of intent to join a program.
