NBA Rumors: Draymond Green, Kuminga Eyed By Suns in Kevin Durant Trade with Warriors
February 4, 2025
The Golden State Warriors are reportedly calling teams about every All-Star player in the league, and that apparently includes ex-Warrior and current Phoenix Suns forward Kevin Durant.
On Tuesday, Sam Amick, David Aldridge and Anthony Slater of The Athletic reported the latest on the Durant-Suns-Warriors front, noting how Phoenix could move KD to form a pathway to landing Miami Heat forward Jimmy Butler.
As far as what the Suns would want in return, Warriors forwards Draymond Green and Jonathan Kuminga were both mentioned.
"With Butler continuing to angle his way toward the Suns, Phoenix might need to move Durant for the kind of returns that allows it to enhance its offer to Miami," The Athletic trio wrote.
"As of now, league sources say the Suns' messaging about their willingness to trade Durant is different depending on the team.
"In exploratory conversations, the Warriors have only been met with an exorbitant asking price in theoretical structures — essentially everything of future value — considering the tricky spot the Suns seem to find themselves. League sources say four-time All-Star forward Draymond Green, who has an established relationship with fellow Michigan State alum and Suns owner Mat Ishbia, is among the Warriors players Phoenix is known to covet."
Regarding Kuminga, The Athletic had this to say.
"The Suns also have indicated a level of interest in fourth-year forward Jonathan Kuminga, a player the Warriors drafted seventh overall in 2021, have been protective of in most trade discussions for years and still view as part of the future," The Athletic wrote.
"But Durant's potential availability, and this once-unthinkable notion of him reuniting with the franchise he helped lead to two titles, has a way of altering the discussion."
A Warriors-Suns shake-up wouldn't be surprising, especially with both teams and the Sacramento Kings in a three-way tie for ninth in the Western Conference.
Both teams are fighting just to make the playoffs, and they need to do something different.
Phoenix just won nine of 12 games, but a pair of losses at the 21-29 Portland Trail Blazers is concerning. Meanwhile, the Warriors' 12-3 start is long gone, as the team's record is 13-21 since.
After the Dallas Mavericks just traded one of the game's best players, Luka Dončić, in his prime, it seems like anything could be on the table around the league. The Suns moving KD wouldn't be a shock even though he's a perennial superstar averaging 26.9 points per game. Phoenix was hoping for better results after trying for a Big Three with Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal, but they haven't materialized.
As for the Warriors, they obviously know firsthand that Durant and Curry would form a great pairing, considering the two combined for three Western Conference titles and two NBA championships from the 2016-17 to 2018-19 seasons.
Granted, they wouldn't be flanked by Klay Thompson anymore, and Green could very well be heading to Phoenix in a hypothetical deal based on The Athletic report. But like the Suns, the Warriors need to make a move and hope for the best, as the status quo isn't working.
The time to watch is 3 p.m. ET on Thursday, when the NBA's trade deadline hits. It's already been a seismic trade season, but the moves may not be done just yet.
