Malik Nabers Has 'No Preference' on Next Giants QB amid Shedeur Sanders, Ward Rumors
February 5, 2025
Who will be the starting quarterback for the 2025 season is the biggest question surrounding the New York Giants, and the team's star wide receiver isn't picking favorites at this point.
"Really no preference," Malik Nabers said Wednesday when talking about the quarterback spot during a discussion with Mike Florio and Chris Simms of NFL on NBC (4:40 mark).
"I do want a guy who is able to lead the team to wins, be a leader in that locker room. Being able to lead the offense when we're out there. … We need a leader in that offensive room. Next year, I'm going to step up and be that for sure, but I'm also going to need a few guys with me."
Nabers explained that he would prefer a veteran to be in the room even if it is a rookie starter just to help the young player's transition into the NFL.
New York had a quarterback carousel this past season with Daniel Jones, Drew Lock, Tommy DeVito and Tim Boyle all taking snaps, which is not exactly a lineup of surefire future Hall of Famers. The team's decision to eventually move on with Jones signaled the start of a new era and brought long-term questions to the position.
It is in position to potentially answer those questions with the No. 3 pick in the draft, although even that might not be high enough if Miami's Cam Ward and Colorado's Shedeur Sanders are the top two picks.
B/R's NFL Scouting department ranks Ward and Sanders as its top two signal-callers on its latest big board, and both the Tennessee Titans and Cleveland Browns have question marks at quarterback as well. If they choose to take the top prospects at that position, the Giants may look to wait until the later rounds to take someone like Ohio State's Will Howard or Ole Miss' Jaxson Dart.
Whoever is the quarterback will at least have one advantage, and that is the ability to throw to Nabers.
The LSU product was a Pro Bowler in his first season behind 109 catches for 1,204 yards and seven touchdowns. He said he is ready to assume more of a leadership role in his second year, and it remains to be seen who will be leading alongside him at quarterback.
