FT, Uruguay face France in QFs #URU predictably unflappable late on. Such hard workers in attack and in midfield, kept forcing #POR into dead ends & frustrating long shots POR only looked dangerous when B Silva moved quickly between lines, FBs poor delivery/choices cost hugely
Reaction
A fantastic day for neutrals and Uruguayans...but Portugal are going home.

Full time
Uruguay 2-1 Portugal
90+3'
Quaresma wants a free-kick, doesn't get it, screams at the ref along with Ronaldo. The No. 7 is booked and would miss the quarters...doesn't look like it'll matter.
- July 1, 2018
- June 30, 2018
90+2'
Suarez bundles the ball past two defenders, whips a cross in from the far side and almost lays it on perfectly for Rodriguez - who just can't quite get enough on his touch.
90'
Into stoppage time we go. Uruguay still looking perfectly happy with their defensive work. Portugal have to throw everything at it...Ronaldo slices one well, well off target.
Four minutes added on.

- June 30, 2018
87'
Manuel Fernandes shoots from 25 yards, off target...then does exactly the same thing again. Ronaldo is displeased.
84'
Torreira gets back to cut out a low cross after Silva opens up Uruguay down the right channel. Getting close to now-or-never time. Silva then dribbles past three and frees Ricardo down the right...but he simply bounces off Godin who is covering and loses the ball.

Into the final 10. Portugal trying, but getting nowhere fast. Uruguay playing cleverly around the press and moving the ball upfield.
- July 1, 2018
- June 30, 2018
79'
Ronaldo tries a 30 yard turn-and-shoot, but it's blocked. Not much movement ahead of him; Andre Silva needs to come up with more than Guedes managed.
76'
Final 15 minutes. Do Portugal have a second equaliser in them? If not it's France v Uruguay in the quarters.

POR: Andre Silva on for Guedes URU: Cavani off, Stuani on
70'
Cristiano has to help a limping Cavani off the pitch and the two-goal striker signals he needs to be subbed. Injury has struck.

Heading toward the final 20 minutes and Portugal have a great chance to equalise; Muslera drops a cross, Bernardo Silva flicks the ball up and drills a shot...over the bar.

Pavard earlier, Mbappe, Cavani in the first half...and now a brace of beauts for the Uruguayan striker. Back over to you, Portugal.

URU sub
Rodriguez on for Bentancur
Beautiful Goal!
A swift attack, the ball is fed left and Cavani comes onto it...and bends a sumptuous first-time effort beyond Patricio into the far corner!
61' - GOAL!
Uruguay 2-1 Portugal Edinson Cavani
58'
Uruguay have been sat back for much of the game since scoring. Will they now be able to step it up and attack once more?
Equaliser!
From the corner, Uruguay are finally breached for the first time in the World Cup as Pepe rises unmarked and buries a header!
54' - GOAL!
Uruguay 1-1 Portugal Pepe
53'
A low cross from the right reaches Ronaldo, he touches it back to Adrien Silva and his shot is deflected wide.
52'
A corner falls kindly for Guerreiro on the edge of the box, but his dipping effort goes horribly wide. A visual representation of his World Cup thus far, to be honest.
48'
Portugal in possession, but they haven't exactly started off firing on all cylinders in the second half. They need some magic.
Second Half
Back underway in Sochi.
Reaction
Three-and-a-half games at the finals now for Uruguay without conceding. Portugal have to change that or they're out.
Half time
Uruguay 1-0 Portugal
Injury time
Two minutes added on
44'
Suarez is down with a head injury, though it seemed more elbow-to-back than anything else. Portugal continued playing and the South American fans aren't amused. Corner to Portugal after Suarez gets some treatment.
40'
Approaching half-time and no sign of a breakthrough for Portugal. Uruguay settling into a defensive pattern now and waiting for counter-attacking chances.
37'
Portugal go wide, back infield, wide on the other side, cross....Uruguay inevitably clear. Very difficult path to goal through Godin and Gimenez.
33'
Ronaldo's free-kick is hit straight into the wall and Portugal are struggling to create anything of note here.

4 - Since 1966, only Grzegorz Lato & Andrzej Szarmach (5 for Poland) and Michael Ballack & Miroslav Klose (5 for Germany) have combined for more World Cup goals than Edinson Cavani & Luis Suarez (4 for Uruguay). Combinations. #WorldCup #URU #URUPOR https://t.co/6u4exvH3HF

Luis Suarez Goes Close from Free-Kick (🎥 US Only)
30'
Nice touch and turn by Guedes on the edge of the box and Bentancur bundles him over. Free-kick, shooting chance, just left of centre.
26'
Portugal's defence really struggling so far. Both full-backs are being easily beaten and Fonte has had a difficult opening almost-half-hour too.
22'
Suarez drills the free-kick himself, low and hard, and forces a good save from Rui Patricio.
21'
Suarez races forward, beats Fonte and draws a foul. Shooting opportunity, right of centre and 25 yards out.
17'
Ronaldo forced deep to search for possession. Portugal coming into the game more now, but without really combining in the final third to any great effect as yet.
13'
Suarez latches onto a loose pass at the back, turns Fonte and shoots - but it's blocked and behind. Good start this from Uruguay.
10'
Portugal trying to mount a response. A cross to the far post is met by Fonte, but he's fouling Caceres as he climbs to head across goal.
What a Start!
Cavani whacks a crossfield ball to Suarez, he races to the corner of the box and belts a 25-yard cross back to Cavani...who buries a header inside the near post! Amazing one-two over long distance!
6' - GOAL!
Uruguay 1-0 Portugal Edinson Cavani
5'
Godin and Pepe are pulled up for pushing in the box off a corner. Ronaldo, meanwhile, rifles in a low shot which Muslera saves.
2'
Decent start from Portugal. A move down the left ends with Joao Mario crossing deep for Bernardo Silva, but his header is awkward and off target.
Kick-off!
We are underway.

Anthems done, players on the pitch...kick-off coming up!
Cristiano's Goal Search
Four World Cup goals so far...but Ronaldo still has never scored a knock-out goal at any finals. Can he change that this year?
20 Mins to KO
We know who awaits these teams in the quarter-finals, so will either Uruguay or Portugal show the ambition to go on and try to win today...or merely try not to lose?
Irresistible Force vs. Immovable Object?
Cristiano Ronaldo comes into the game with 15 shots and four goals so far in his three games...but Uruguay have allowed just six shots on target and have kept three clean sheets from three.
Round of 16
The lineups are in and there are changes for both teams. URU - Nandez and Torreira are handed starts, Cavani and Suarez lead the line. POR - Guedes returns up front, Ricardo is in at right-back.
